Persuasive Writing: How to Get Instant Results

Course Description

Working through a variety of real world writing situations, students will learn to write persuasively using both Rogerian and classical persuasive elements. Pre-writing will include (1) determining task and audience (2) identifying audience stance and possible common ground (3) selecting the most effective approach (Rogerian, classical, or a combination). Writing will include multiple drafts of writing tasks to develop effective uses of rhetorical appeals: logos, ethos, pathos, and kairos. Revision activities will address establishing effective organization strategies and word choice for maximum effective. Finally, editing will include polishing the text to eliminate errors in grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation.

Outcome

Upon successful completion, the learner will be able to write persuasively by:

  • establishing credibility as a writer
  • using positive presuppositions
  • establishing common ground with stakeholders
  • including concession when necessary
  • appropriately addressing different stakeholders (audiences)
  • effectively using emotional appeals – ethos, logos, pathos, and kairos
  • anticipating opposition and providing rebuttals
  • organizing your ideas for maximum effect
  • selecting appropriate word choice for maximum effect
  • recognizing fallacies in logic

Assessment

Assessments for this course will be the creation of effective documents suited to situations provided by the instructor. The final activity will be to create a document for a real-world situation of the student’s choosing.
